Alright, so for an independent study at school I’m considering building a “supercomputer” by linking up 25 or so old OLD computers (400 MHZ avg). There are two ways I was planning to do this, and I have no idea how to do either. I was either going to use the distributed computing idea and link them up on a network, or somehow link the processors together. Unfortunately, though, I have no idea where to start and have never done anything like this… can anyone help me out or give me a site that will help? I looked briefly at a beowolf cluster, but I’m not sure if that will work… the computers are all different.

Computer Speech Technology
do people do this? i have like several old computers but i didn’t know you could link them up??? and over a network wouldn’t help by the way, i can already tell you that… why dont you just purchase new parts and make a really great computer for under 1500 bucks. i plan on doing that when i get the money, already know the parts i’m getting and everything
Computer on a Chip
You need to design a software program that is capable of handling that kind of load. Then interface it with all the computers. Then network all the computers. and make the program run an insane algorithm to test it.
supercomputer
the only way to logically link those machine’s to perform any task would be through the network.
your idea of using the Beowulf cluster approach seems like a plus.
also using the open source linux OS to achieve such a cluster will produce the most network throughput.
Computer Brain Interface
I agree with Justin. Try a Beowulf cluster.
